No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
