New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
